Myanmar Community Livelihood Programme

Acknowledging the current obstacles for a safe and dignified return of refugees to Myanmar, TCR made a commitment to remove the obstacles and lay the foundation for a safe and dignified return of refugees to Myanmar by starting a community and livelihood project in Karen State, with the approval from the government of Myanmar as well as the Karen National Union. H.E. U Aung Min, Minister of the President’s Office of Union of Myanmar, expressed appreciation for TCRs assistance in Myanmar.

TCR believes that repatriation should happen organically, emphasizing a voluntary return. This will naturally take place once the conditions back in Myanmar are safe and opportunities to earn a living are available. Not only does this apply to the return of refugees, but also to internally displaced persons in Myanmar. As elaborated, TCR is in the belief that the time is right for starting to help the development in Myanmar. Working closely with the KNU, TCRs focus will be on projects including, but not limited to assistance on humanitarian demining, community development, agriculture, water and sanitation, health, education and livelihood. TCR believes that this project could act as a catalyst that will bring in more development projects into the Karen state and be the start of an end to the much protracted refugee and IDP situation along the Thai and Myanmar border.
